-Japanese Horses finish 1st & 2nd in world's Richest Race-

Japanese-bred VICTOIRE PISA (JPN) (4 year-old colt by Neo Universe (JPN), carrying 57.0kg) won the world's richest race against top international horses from England, Ireland, United States, South Africa and Dubai when he triumphed in the Dubai World Cup (Winner's Purse US$6,000,000, All weather track, 2000m) at Meydan Racecourse on March 26th. Another Japanese-bred, Transcend (JPN) came in second, demonstrating that Japanese-bred horses are more than capable of performing at the world's highest level.

15 Japanese horses have won 18 G1 races around the world to date. This is the 4th time Japanese horses came in both 1st and 2nd.

The Fasig Tipton Florida Selected Two-year-olds in Training Sale was held at Palm Meadows Training Center in Florida, U.S.A. on March 3, 2011. The top-priced lot of the sale was hip number 182, a filly by Empire Maker (USA) out of Half A.P. (by Pulpit), who sold for US$1,350,000. Empire Maker recently began his first breeding season in Japan at the JBBA Shizunai Stallion this year. The top-priced colt, hip 186, was also by Empire Maker, out of Henderson Band (by Chimes Band) and sold for US$750,000.

Chinese Buyers purchase horses for first time in Japan at 2010 Hokkaido Autumn Sale

Mr. Zhang Yuesheng from China, who visited the 2010 Hokkaido Autumn Sale (held from Oct. 18-21), purchased 18 yearlings (6 colts, 12 fillies) for a total of 47,355,000yen. This was the first time a buyer from China made a purchase at a sale in Japan, which added much excitement to the Sale.

Buyers from Singapore were present once again at the 2010 Hokkaido Autumn Sale and actively participated in the bidding to purchase 3 fillies for a total of 10,290,000yen.

Japanese-bred and trained NAKAYAMA FESTA (JPN), a four-year-old colt by Stay Gold (JPN), demonstrated his talent in one of the top races in the world when he finished a strong second carrying 59.5kg in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (2,400m Turf; Going: very soft) at Longchamp Racecourse on October 3, 2010. NAKAYAMA FESTA (JPN)'s second-place effort, just a head short of the winner Workforce (3-y-o colt by King's Best carrying 56kg), who won the 2010 Epsom Derby decisively in record time, showcased the strength of Japanese-bred horses at the highest international level.

Japanese-bred Jolie's Shinju wins MRA Singapore Horse of the Year!

　Japanese-bred mare Jolie's Shinju was voted Da Ma Cai Champion Horse of Singapore 2009 at the 2009 Malayan Racing Association Awards held in Perak, Malaysia on Saturday, February 27th, 2010.

　Jolie's Shinju swept the Singapore 4-Year-Old Challenge in 2009, winning the Patron's Bowl (Sin-G1), the Singapore Derby Trial (Sin-G2) and the Singapore Derby (Sin-G1). She was the first mare to win the Singapore Derby since Showgirl in 1973.

　The mare by Jolie's Halo (USA) out of Endearing Quality (USA) has won 9 out of 24 starts with earnings of S$1,324,552.50+M$61,592 (total of approximately S$1,350,162.77).

　Jolie's Shinju was purchased by owner Dr. K.C. Tan at the 2006 Hokkaido Autumn Sale for 3,150,000yen (approximately S$48,790).

El Dorado strikes gold again in second consecutive Singapore Gold Cup win

Japanese-bred El Dorado (Stay Gold - White Leap (by White Muzzle)) won his second consecutive Singapore Gold Cup (Sin-G1) at Singapore's Kranji Racecourse on November 8th.

The five-year-old gelding won the S$1.35million race over 2,200m even more dominantly than he did last year, managing to shorten the record time by 0.3 seconds. The win last year was trainer Hideyuki Takaoka's first Group win in Singapore, but he commented that this win was much more satisfying than last year's.

The winning jockey Ronnie Stewart was aboard El Dorado in last year's Gold Cup as well, and this year, he has also ridden another Japanese-bred, Jolie's Shinju, in her clean sweep of the Singapore triple crown for 4-year-olds

El Dorado has now won 7 of 30 starts with total earnings of S$1,900,177.50.

Bred by Takano Bokujo (Farm) in Hokkaido, El Dorado was purchased by current owner and Singapore-based businessman Masatsugu Otani (Big Valley Stable) at the 2006 Hidaka Training Sale for 5,000,000yen (excluding tax).

El Dorado's sire, Stay Gold (by Sunday Silence) achieved success as a racehorse in the 2001 Hong Kong Vase (G1) and Dubai Sheema Classic (G2). He has sired multiple Group winners in Japan, including multiple G1 winner and 2006 2-year-old champion Dream Journey.

Jolie's Shinju(JPN) wins Singapore Derby (Sin-G1) to Capture Triple Crown

4-year-old Japanese-bred mare Jolie's Shinju (Jolie's Halo(USA) - Endearing Quality(USA)) won the Singapore Derby (Sin-G1) at Kranji Racecourse on July 12th to sweep the Singapore Triple Crown after winning the Patron's Bowl (Sin-G1) and the Singapore Derby Trial (Sin-G2).

Originally raced for speed at shorter distances, the mare answered any doubts about her ability to run longer distances by winning the 2,000m race on the turf by a decisive 5 length margin.

Purchased by owner Dr. K.C. Tan at the 2006 Hokkaido Autumn Sale for 3,150,000yen, Jolie's Shinju(JPN) has now won 9 of her 19 starts and has earned S$1,324,552.50.

The connections are now considering racing Jolie's Shinju(JPN) in the Cox Plate (G1) in Melbourne in October later this year.

4-year-old Japanese-bred Jolie's Shinju (Jolie's Halo(USA) - Endearing Quality(USA)), winner of this year's Patron's Bowl (Sin-G1), scored another victory in the 1600m Singapore Derby Trial (Sin-G2) over 1600m on the turf at Kranji Racecourse on June 21,2009. She now has a record of 8 wins from 18 starts with earnings of S$789,052.50.

Now a top contender in the Singapore Derby (Sin-G1) (2000m turf) to be held on July 12, Jolie's Shinju(JPN) will be a triple crown winner if she wins the upcoming race. Another Japanese-bred, 4-year-old gelding Keep Away (Air Jihad(JPN) - Laurel Alice(JPN)) will also be running in the Singapore Derby. Keep Away(JPN) was purchased at the 2006 Hokkaido Autumn Sale by trainer Hideyuki Takaoka for 1,575,000yen

Japanese-bred Jolie's Shinju wins Singapore G1 Patron's Bowl

  Japanese-bred 4-year-old mare Jolie's Shinju (Jolie's Halo(USA) - Endearing Quality(USA)) scored a brilliant win in the Patron's Bowl (Sin-G1) over 1400m on the turf at Kranji Racecourse in Singapore on May 31, 2009. She has now won 7 of her 17 starts with earnings of S$789,052.50

  This is the second G1 win by a Japanese-bred horse in Singapore racing, after the win by El Dorado(JPN) (Stay Gold(JPN) - White Leap(JPN)) in the 2008 Singapore Gold Cup (Sin-G1).
  Jolie's Shinju(JPN) was purchased by owner Dr. K.C. Tan at the 2006 Hokkaido Autumn Sale for 3,150,000yen.

JBBA Incentive Bonus Claimed by 3 Japanese-bred Horses in Just One Month (Singapore)

Japanese-bred horses sold at sales that win a race in Singapore are currently eligible to win a bonus prize of S$20,000 (please see previous topic "Bonus Scheme for Japanese-breds that win in Malaysia or Singapore" dated February 8, 2009) from the JBBA. (Note: Races with prizemoney of over S$200,000 are excluded, and any one horse can win up to only 2 bonuses.)

For the 2009 year, this bonus scheme has been in effect from March first, and as of the end of March, 3 horses have already won the bonus. There are 7 bonuses remaining to be distributed to Singapore-based horses. In 2008, all 10 bonuses for Singapore-based horses had been claimed by the end of August.

So far, Japanese-bred horses seem to be showing an affinity for the Polytrack surface in Singapore, and on the turf, the Japanese-bred El Dorado (Stay Gold - White Leap (by White Muzzle)) has won the Group 1 Singapore Gold Cup.

2008 MRA Awards Announced: Japanese-bred finalist for Champion Singapore Horse

The MRA Awards for excellence in Malaysia and Singapore racing were announced earlier this month at a gala dinner held on February 7th in Singapore. It was good news for Japanese-bred horse that El Dorado (Stay Gold - White Leap), the Japanese-bred winner of the 2008 Singapore Gold Cup (G1), was one of the three finalists for Da Ma Cai Champion Horse of Singapore. Although the honor went to Australian-bred Top Spin (Arena - Gas) who won 6 group races in 2008, El Dorado's Gold Cup win last year certainly attracted attention to Japanese-bred horses.

Trainer Takaoka and Jockey Uchida receive special recognition at NAR Awards

Trainer Hideyuki Takaoka and jockey Toshio Uchida received special recognition at the 2008 NAR (National Association for Racing) Grand Prix Awards held in Tokyo in early February.

Trainer Hideyuki Takaoka was the leading trainer in the Hokkaido regional racing circuit in 2000. He later relocated with 18 of his Japanese-trained horses to Singapore, where he started training in 2003. In November of 2008, he won his first G1 race in Singapore with El Dorado (JPN) in the Singapore Gold Cup. His special award of merit is in recognition of his pioneering work as a trainer from Japanese regional racing who has successfully ventured overseas.

Jockey Toshio Uchida was a leading jockey for many years at the now closed Utsunomiya Racecourse and since then has been riding at numerous regional racetracks around the country. In 2008, he rode at Busan Gyeongnam Racecourse in Korea on a short-term riding license from June until the end of December. During that period, he achieved an outstanding result of 69 winners and 43 seconds from 311 rides, with a win percentage of 22.2% and place percentage of 35.7%, which was a record at the racecourse for the number of wins in a year as well as for win and place percentages. He also rode for 2 months in 2008 in Macau, where he won a G1 race. His special award of merit is for his riding success in the 2 countries.
